It has been said that achieving diversity is a compelling state interest. While the purpose of this post is not to discuss my opinions on Grutter v. Bollinger, all signs seem to indicate that when it comes to search engine visibility, having a more diverse back link profile, is in you law firm website’s best interest:
In fact, when viewed in a vacuum, obtaining a link from a new domain, appears to be more valuable than acquiring a new link from a domain that already links to your site.
This is yet another example of why contextual links from a variety of relevant websites will have a better impact on your site’s visibility than getting a multitude of blog roll links or footer links from just a handful of sites.
The benefits of a diverse link profile also illustrate the importance of a continuing link building effort. Even if you have a decent back link profile, if you are not working to cultivate additional links, the diversity of your back link profile will usually degrade over time.
The issue, of course, is that if your site is listed on the blog roll or footer of a website, each new post or page created on that site will add another link to your site. If you are not acquiring links from new domains, each new link from an existing linking-domain will decrease your overall domain diversity.
That is why it is so important to continually update and maintain your website and seek new sources of links.
