Over at SearchEngineLand, Debra Mastaler shares expert answers to 3 Common Link Building Questions:
- How Would You Spend $100 On Promoting A Blog?
- If I Get 4000 New Inbound Links, What Will This Do To Us?
- What Is News Worthy Content?
I recommend checking out the article as these are some seriously expert link builders. Here are some of my thoughts.
How Would You Spend $100 On Promoting Your Legal Blog?
First, again you should check out Debra’s post to see Julie’s ideas.
Second, I would consider paying for a press release. However, I would actually make a press release and not press spam.
My recommendation is that your press release serve two functions. One, to announce the launch of your new blog (which hopefully is on a very specific topic). And two, to highlight a post. This will give readers a taste of what’s going on at your new blog.
Concentrate on what makes the launch of your new blog newsworthy (no, it’s not that it’s your first blog). What topics will you cover? Who are your readers? What information will you provide them.
Newsworthy press releases are a great way to kick-off a new blog. They can also be a decent way of acquiring some new links.
If I Get 4000 New Inbound Links To My Law Firm Website, What Will This Do To Us?
While link velocity spikes should be a concern, there is a second question that will be more informative:
“If I Get 4000 New Inbound Links From X Source, What Will This Do To Us?”
For example, if you get 4000 new inbound links from a well-known paid link source, the answer may be that it buries your site.
On the other hand, if you write a blog post that gets picked up by several legitimate news sites, 4000 new inbound links may be the best thing that ever happened to your site since you registered your domain.
Eric’s advice resonates:
The common thread to these questions is in recognizing that every site requires a unique linking strategy or blueprint, and the more identical those linking blueprints are, the less helpful they will be. Every linking strategy blueprint I create for a client is unique, and is based on the site’s features, intent, and objectives. While 4000 new links could take one site to #1, it might take another site right to the penalty box.
While there is no question that acquiring new links is on the very short list of priorities for success in search, it’s very important to consider the source. Focus on the most relevant and trusted link sources for your specific practice and geographic area.
What Is News Worthy Legal Content?
I like Ross’s answer:
Newsworthy content is anything your target market would immediately copy and paste to share with their friends in that same market.
To me, it’s all about getting your content in front of the right audiences. What may be newsworthy to one, may be spam to another. Focus on your audience. What are they looking for online? How can you get it in front of them.
In a recent Whiteboard Friday, Rand Fishkin talked about how the Panda Update changed SEO forever. While a lot of really great information came out of that video, the thing that stuck with me was something he wrote in small purple text:
“Makes everyone who sees it want to share it. WOW!”
That’s what newsworthy content is.
